Job Search Pitfalls For the First Time Worker Finding a first job can be a trial. You lack experience. You lack contacts. You lack…well the list of all of your deficits would be too large for this article. (Really sorry). To make matters worse, all of those Fast Food joints who advertise as being primarily staffed by teenagers, well the average employee age is 29 years old. What does that mean? Young first time workers will need to compete with seasoned professionals for a mind-numbing minimum wage job flipping burgers or scooping ice cream for irate customers. Here’s a bit of good news. You can still beat out all of those older, experienced adults for the job. In order to land that job, you should steer clear of these rookie mistakes. Step One: Questionnaire/Personality Test Beware The majority of entry level positions require potential candidates answer a very long and very boring questionnaire. It’s just a little quiz, you might think. Wrong. The questionnaire is a method to systematically and mathematically collect a vast collection of “bad” candidates. “Bad” being defined in most cases as a thieving thug with no morals, an introverted curmudgeon with no desire to socialize, and an up-start with no ability or desire to listen to orders. Here are a few tips to ace this exam: Some questions only have one right answer. Answer the question appropriately even if you don’t ethically believe it. For example the question (do you believe you have the right to take products from the store without paying for them) is meant to be answered with a very firm NO. Re-read questions. Some questions are tricky. Read carefully. If you’re unsure what the question is asking, ask a friend or family member to interpret. For the more personality geared questions, you might want to understate some of your less desirable traits. You have a habit of never listening to your superiors, as of right now you’re pretty good at taking advice. Step Two: Full-time, Don’t Make Me Laugh Full-time entry level food service or department store jobs are remnants of a distant past. Today, large corporations reserve full-time positions to tenured or managerial level employees. Why? It’s a matter of money. The Affordable Care Act AKA Obamacare requires businesses with fifty or more full-time employees to either provide health insurance or pay a penalty. Many of the companies would rather spend a little extra money training more part-time employees (30 hours a week or less) than providing insurance. Long story short: if you want employers to call you back, don’t just check off that you want full-time. Make it very clear you would be willing to work part-time. Not ideal, but a reality you must deal with. Step Three: Don’t Short Change Your Resume As a first-time job seeker, you might find yourself wracking your brain to locate credentials and experiences to flesh out your resume. Here’s something that many people don’t realize: education and clubs can count as actionable experience. Have you led any group projects? Have you collaborated with a team on reports? Have you managed to ace a report despite an overwhelming work load? Think of big projects or unique experiences you’ve been assigned in the last year. Once you’ve listed down as many as you can think of, determine which projects have managed to allow you to demonstrate core skills (team work, stress management, etc.) that could be useful at your potential workplace. Add any identified experiences to your resume. Be concrete. If you were the group manager on the project, write down how many people you led. If the job doesn’t call for a resume, you will still be able to utilize the experiences you identify in the job interview. Locating a first job can be a momentous task. Despite the difficulty, first time job seekers can successfully land a job. You can significantly decrease the amount of time you will need to search for a job by steering clear of these three career pitfalls.

Where are the jobs?Hound.com â€" This is a different type of job search site from what I’ve reviewed in previous posts. Rather than listing jobs from recruiters or from other search sites, hound.com pulls jobs directly from employer career pages (their tag line Search Jobs Direct from Employer Career Pages). However, this is not free. The hound.com site charges a fee (based on the length of time you subscribe). Due to the fee, I’ve not fully reviewed the site, but there is a free video you can watch on the main page of the site.Job-Hunt â€" Job-Hunt is a free online search site that offers advice, job search news, and a comprehensive (and quite amazing) list of job search sites (categorized by location, networking, industry/profession, etc.). You could easily spend a few days leveraging the links from this site alone (and maybe you should). Unlike other search sites, it does not appear as if jobs are posted directly to Job-Hunt. Rather, it provides links to other sites that have posted jobs.Employersjobs.com â€" This is a free site that claims to link employers and candidates. The set-up is a 3-step process:   upload your resume/CV, create your profile (I don’t recommend entering your date of birth), and create email alerts. The password is assigned to you (you will receive it in an email). You can set up a job alert, but I’ve not been able to find out how to run it. If you try to edit the alert, you get an error. After creating an “advanced” search, specifically indicating the US and NY, it produced jobs only in York (the UK) and other UK locations. Clearly, this is a UK-based search site, which either needs additional work or should not show locations it cannot support.Trovix.com â€" Trovix, which is in beta (and is free), matches your “dream job” and your resume versus open jobs. It also looks like they are creating a social network (like LinkedIn) at the same time (but you can skip this step). When joining, the site analyzes your resume and some basic information (location and title). After analyzing your resume, the site asks you to confirm some basic information from your resume, then you complete the sign-up process. The site also lists several employers on the main page that are currently hiring. The matching seems to work well and is easy to use.Good luck in your search.

I placed a pile of these cards anonymously, with a few gifts (fun stickers, pencils, erasers) for a teacher at the school, encouraging them to continue the crime-spree about to find out the results. We have used them in the past as a unofficial gauge of the culture of a school sometimes this tells us more than the official opinion surveys! Staff dont need to spend money, just come up with a way to make someones day weve had cars washed, playground duties covered (a big one with teachers!), sometimes bringing someone a coffee or cup of tea on a busy day works well. Holland (again) Another one of our Dutch partners, Toptimism at Work, made this beautiful video: Denmark Bloch?stergaard just revolutionized performance reviews for one client by changing them to a network-based model. Heres how they did it: Yesterday we killed the annual boss/employee appraisal-and-development-plan meeting for on of our clients, and replaced it with a network-based mentor-board approach for development and well-being for employees. We wanted to remove the hub-and-spoke approach to development planning, and replace it with sincere care and advice from people in the organization, that knows what youre working with, how you approach it, and how well the interaction with colleagues is handled. We started two months ago by mapping the organisational network structure, (who do you work with, who do you get sparring from, who do you get energy from, and who do you talk to about private matters), from which we have established mentor boards for each employee, consisting of two people from the network, that you yourself have pointed towards in the net work analysis. The mentor board will then help/coach you and support you in your development, gather feedback from the network, and strive to nurture well-being. Results and relations must be discussed on each board meeting, and happiness at work is explicitly part of the templates and material. Will it work? I think so. It was received by one of the most experienced?male specialists in the group with the words this is brilliant! How incredibly awesome! Serbia Vega IT arranged a relay race for charity not just for their own employees but for all IT companies in Novi Sad. 184 runners organized in 46 teams participated. Turkey Power of Happiness in Turkey just had their second annual international conference about happiness at work.
